Think before you throw when you’re on the go!

Summer is finally here - and whether you’re heading to an attraction, escaping on a camping trip, or dancing at a festival, now’s the perfect time to nail your recycling.

Wales is already smashing it as the second-best recycler in the world - but we’ve got our sights set on that number one spot. And thanks to the workplace recycling law (that started in April 2024), recycling outside your home is now easier than ever.

But there’s one small habit that can make a mighty difference...

A trio of images. Image 1 is recycling bins lined up outside a castle wall. Image 2 is 4 bins on grass opposite festival banners. Image 3 shows recycling bins lined up outside against a wall with a sandy beach in the background.

Think before you throw when you’re on the go!

Before you bin anything, take a second to check the signs so you know what goes in what bin. It’s a one-second habit that can have a big impact.

Thanks to the law, all businesses in Wales - including attractions, cafes, events and holiday parks - now have to separate recyclable waste for collection and onward recycling, just like at home. You’ll likely spot bins and signs for:

  • Plastic bottles, drinks cans & cartons

  • Glass

  • Food

  • Paper/card

  • General waste

When we’re out and about, it’s easy to go into autopilot – but putting the wrong thing in the wrong bin could contaminate the entire batch, meaning none of it can be recycled.

One quick check = one small win for Wales! Every item recycled correctly gets the chance of a second life – saving resources, creating new products, and moving Wales closer to that No.1 recycling spot.

Greener Getaways

Heading off on a Welsh staycation? From camping adventures to a holiday park escapes, recycling while you’re away is easier than ever. From inedible food waste to empty suncream bottles - make sure they go in the right bin, every time.

Did you know? Recycled food waste in Wales gets turned into renewable energy - recycling just one banana peel correctly can help generate enough energy to charge two smartphones!

Recycle your beats - Festival and event recycling

Hitting a festival or a summer event? Don’t let your good vibes go to waste.

Whether it’s a one-day event or a full weekend of campaign and dancing, most of what you pack - and use - can be recycled. From empty cans and drinks bottles to empty dry shampoo and deodorant aerosols.

Fun fact: Recycling just two drink cans correctly saves enough energy to power a DJ set for one hour. Your empties could help keep the party going!

Keep an eye out for dedicated recycling bins around the event and bin it right between sets

Eat, enjoy, Recycle! The smarter way to picnic

If you’re enjoying a picnic at a park, beach or up in the stunning Welsh mountains, and you can’t see recycling bins around, you can still do your bit.

When you’re soaking up the views at one of Wales’ many beauty spots, the best thing you can do is take your waste home and recycle it there. From yoghurt pots to drinks bottles and leftover apple cores, it can all be recycled.

Top tip: Disposable BBQs can't be recycled. Let them cool completely (which can take a few hours), then place them in general waste – safely and responsibly.

Let’s power Wales to No.1

Every time you recycle, you’re making a difference.

Food waste can be turned into energy. Bottles and cans get a new lease of life. Every item binned correctly helps cut waste, save resources, and brings us one step closer to the top spot.

So wherever this summer takes you – a beach, a festival, or a favourite Welsh attraction – keep it green and bin it right.

Think before you throw! It only takes a moment, but together, we can make Wales the best recycler in the world. Let’s do this!
