Wales is the world’s 2nd best recycling nation, but we’re aiming for No.1 and keeping food waste out of the rubbish is the top action we can take to get there! Did you know that a quarter of the average rubbish bin in Wales is still filled with food waste, most of which could have been eaten?
Get involved
The Mighty Food Waste Mission is calling on children aged 5 to 11 to become informed, self-aware citizens to help push Wales to the top of the recycling league and become a zero-waste nation by 2050.
Our flexible, adaptable and interactive resources are designed to fit easily into your classroom or assembly plans. Through fun and engaging activities, pupils will learn about the value food, and why it’s important to make the most of what we have and recycle what can’t be eaten – transforming it into renewable energy.
We’re also encouraging parents to get involved! They can take the Wales Recycles pledge to help rescue food from the rubbish, and by doing so, they’ll be entered into a draw to win a Mighty Welsh holiday or an exciting family adventure.
The classroom activities are aligned with the Curriculum for Wales and your pupils' work can be used as part of your school's Eco-Schools evidence.
What you need to do
Step 1 – Valuable food presentation and quiz: Begin with a lesson or assembly that highlights the importance of food waste prevention and recycling. Pupils will learn the value of food, complete a food waste quiz, and watch videos on food recycling.
Step 2 – Recipes to the rescue: Classroom activities: Engage pupils in designing recipe posters to use up commonly wasted foods, whilst highlighting the inedible parts that should be recycled. You can also follow with a hands-on cooking session, where students turn leftover ingredients into a dish, showing how food waste can be avoided.
Share photos of your recipes and dishes for a chance to win a £50 book voucher and be featured in our online gallery. Email your entries to: WalesRecycles@wrap.org.uk.
Step 3 – Get the parents involved: Encourage families to take the Wales Recycles pledge together and be entered into a prize draw for a chance to win a Bluestone holiday or a day out at top Welsh attractions. We have created a digital flyer for your school newsletters and apps.
